TOF Sensor for Patient Monitoring: Track Human Skeletal Movement

Omron engineers have worked hard to create long lasting and reliable sensing products for manufacturers and product designers. With continued growth of smart sensor demand within the touchless market and for the medical industry, Omron has continued improvements on their latest sensing product, the B5L Time of Flight sensor. An already advanced sensing product that can read and map 2D and 3D environments using state of the art visual technology, Omron is now including software that can detect and track human skeletal movement in real time.
 
The B5L Time of Flight sensor offers several advantages for customers who are seeking a cost-effective solution for highly accurate and sophisticated technology for real-time rendering of 3D spaces:

Recent advancements in the product design as well as increased need for sophisticated solutions in the healthcare industry has propelled Omron engineers to develop additional software that can pair with this device, making it an ideal candidate for applications in patient monitoring.
 
In such applications, there is a growing need for smart solutions that can effectively monitor injured, recovering, or elderly patients while they are under the care and supervision of medical professionals in care facilities. However, there cannot always be someone present to ensure a patient is able to move independently, or has potentially collapsed as they have gotten out of bed to move around the room. While security video footage is certainly a useful solution, privacy is a concern for patients as they may not be comfortable being monitored and possibly recorded by medical facilities. The Time of Flight method allows for users to monitor patients in real time while still allowing for the patients to be confident that their privacy is secured.
 
The B5L Time of Flights sensor utilizes distance technology, measuring location of objects relative to the sensor by recording the time it takes for the LED lights to reflect back to the detector, thus ensuring that no actual image data is being collected. Even though it is impossible to recognize the specific person in front of the sensor, Omron's skeletal detection software can still accurately detect and track individuals as they move across the field of view of the sensor.
